The Hummingbird Track Club operates under the umbrella of the Potomac Valley Association of USA Track and Field (USATF). The USATF Junior Olympic program is an age group competitive program. Competition for track & field and cross country is based on two-year age group windows, defined by the athlete’s age on December 31 of the current year.  The only exception to this rule is a Male or Female 18 years old, out of high school less than one year and is not 19 years old before the day after the end of the USATF Junior Olympic Championship. This rule allows for participation of college athletes meeting the criteria. 

Age Range

8 years old and under
9 to 10 years old
11 to 12 years old
13 to 14 years old
15 to 16 years old
17 to 18 years old

The Potomac Valley Association (PVA) is the association for the Maryland, District of Columbia, and Northern Virginia metropolitan area. The PVA operates within USATF Region III, made up of the following associations: The PVA, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia.

The first Qualifier (Local) to the USATF Jr. Olympics which is held at several sites within the association. There are no qualifying standards.

The second level qualifier is the PVA Championship; sites for competition may vary year to year. A full schedule of events is contested. General qualifying standards exist (see advancement below).

The last qualifier prior to the USATF National Jr. Olympics is the Region III Championship, site for the championship rotate among the associations from year to year. A full schedule of events is contested. General qualifying standards exist (see advancement below).

Association to Regional:   Top 5 individuals and relays in each event
Regional to National:         Top 3 individuals and relays in each event

CROSS COUNTRY QUALIFYING STANDARD

Association to Regional:   Top 3 teams and other athletes in top 25   
Regional to National:         Top 3 teams and other athletes in top 20
